Government Seeks to Throw The Book at Apple and Major Publishers

Apr. 28, 2012 / by Malhar Naik / 0 Comments

Ipad or Kindle?  This is a question many avid readers debate as they enter the modern world of reading.  My memory of reading as a kid was sensory and tangible: flipping dog-eared, yellowing pages at the library; savoring the smell of a new hardcover book as I attempted to earn my free “Book It” pizza.  [...]

James Joyce’s Published Works Enter Public Domain in the EU

Jan. 11, 2012 / by Ryan Fox / 0 Comments

On December 31, 2011—70 years after James Joyce’s death in Zurich—the Irish writer’s published works passed into the public domain in the European Union.  The end to copyright protection of a major author’s works is an event in and of itself, but to many Joyceans, the event is made sweeter because the Joyce estate has [...]

Law Students Not Only Ones To Loathe The Bluebook

Nov. 03, 2011 / by Amy Dunayevich / 0 Comments

Judge Posner hates it too, apparently. He recently relayed his disgust for The Bluebook in a 12 page Yale Law Review article. To protect the privacy rights of 48 millions customers, Barnes and Noble will hold an opt-out program for former Borders customers to be able to choose to not have their personal information transferred as part of the sale.

Dead Sea Scrolls

Just in time for Rosh Hashanah.

Sep. 27, 2011 / by Amy Dunayevich / 0 Comments

The Dead Sea Scrolls, so ancient and fragile that direct light cannot shine on them, are now available to search and read online in a project launched today by the Israel Museum and Google Inc. From CBSNews: “The appearance of five of the most important Dead Sea Scrolls on the Internet is part of a [...]

“A Big Win For Artists” or “Another Hit For The Recording Industry”

Sep. 21, 2011 / by Ryan Fox / 0 Comments

Thirty-three years later, a look back at 1978 shows the pop-music industry in fine form.  Something for everyone?  Check.  Nineteen seventy-eight saw the debut of Prince, and The Cars’ first album.  The Rolling Stones released Some Girls.  There were albums by both Parliament and Funkadelic.  Willie Nelson made Stardust.  Most of all, the year now [...]

Taking a break from our law books…

Sep. 14, 2011 / by Rebecca Dunlevy / 0 Comments

…to write about books. The New York Times and Courthouse News report on a lawsuit against a partnership of research libraries and five universities. The complainants, authors and authors groups, argue that the digitizing of millions of books constitutes copyright infringement. What do you think?
